It was a day of high drama and exhilarating pressure on Saturday as Offside played host to the Tiger Street Football National Qualifiers.
37 teams from across Singapore battled it out to win glory and a chance to represent our nation at the grand finals in Ho Chi Minh City later this year.
The day started with the players assembling at Offside’s social area to register their teams in the competition. The tense atmosphere of the impending battle hung in the air and it was clear every player had been preparing for this day for a long time. As the teams got together, checking out the competition and discussing game strategies, you could feel how much each team wanted to secure their place in the next round.
As kick off began at 10 am the teams began competing for their places in the finals, with emotions running high as each game progressed.
The event went down a storm with both players and the many supporters who turned up to cheer their teams on to success. With a great array of refreshments available from the Offside shop and Tiger providing the beer, spectators were able to take a seat alongside one of the four futsal pitches and enjoy the match, or take a break from it all by relaxing in the social area listening to the live band belting out covers of all the latest hits.
As the day drew to a close 28 teams secured their places in the grand finals to be held at Marina Bay Sands on October 18th and they will no doubt be training intensively for their chance to win the top prize of USD $3000 and the honour of representing the nation.
Captain of qualifying team ‘Dorset Boys’ Rooban Kanth was delighted with his team’s victory and was full of praises for the event, telling us “The atmosphere was fantastic and it was very well organised compared to other futsal competitions my team has played in”.
Teo Kok Huan who enjoys playing football regularly said of the event “It is good because these are good opportunities to improve our social life. We can also learn from other players and get to play with different people, which can broaden our football vision”
These are very true words and reflects Offside’s mission perfectly. Our aim is to engage players in challenging and fun sports activities, but above all give players a great way to let off some steam and meet like-minded people.
It was clear to see a great time was had by all who attended or participated in the event and not only was it fun day out but competitions like this give local players an excellent opportunity to showcase their considerable talent. So who knows, maybe the next big soccer star will come from Singapore, as it was obvious to those watching the players this Saturday that there certainly isn’t a shortage of soccer talent on the island!
